Rise Of The Women In Prison Of The Apes
The wife had decided last night to get out early today and pick up a few odds and ends from Target, so when I woke with something of a start at 10:00 she was already off and running. The Yorkie greeted me briefly, then went back to sleep at the foot of the bed, so I got up and got the house opened up and hopped on the PC to pass the time until the wife returned.
I spent a bit of time on the nerdlists, as I creep ever closer to having them caught up; my dream is to be done with that project by this coming Monday and be able to start double posting and get this blog up to date again. Fingers crossed...
The wife returned and almost immediately realized that she'd forgotten a few things at the store, so she made plans to head back out to get it over with and be done for the day, offering to pick up some lunch while she was out. I put in my order and then moved back into the den to catch up on e-mail and pay a couple bills.
When she returned about an hour later I helped her unload the car, then we ate while watching this week's episode of The Soup. We caught up on last night's season premiere of The Increasingly Poor Decisions Of Todd Margaret, a show that I liked quite a bit, but had forgotten that it ended on a cliffhanger, so I felt a bit lost as we just jumped back into the story with both feet. I think the series will grow on me as I get back into the rhythm of the show, but this afternoon left me feeling a bit "...um, what?" about the storyline, which they only vaguely recapped in the opening montage.
The wife caught a nap after the show and I watched Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes on Blu-ray off the To-Watch Pile, which I had heard a lot of good things about and decided to give a blind buy because I caught it cheap on Amazon. I would have to agree with the general consensus on this one, it's a good looking, solid little sci-fi film, though I would go so far as to call it a bit melancholy as a whole. The film opens with what we find out is the ape who will mother the key ape Caesar being captured in the jungle, then moves quickly to a lab where experiments will make her offspring increasingly smarter. We have a brief happy respite of Caesar being raised by James Franco's scientist character in his home, then he's forced by circumstances to allow him to be put into captivity, which is naturally a giant fucking downer for the next 20 or 30 minutes of the movie, just lots of things of that nature. It certainly has more sad bits than it does 'wow, cool!' moments or heartwarming stuff, which kinda surprised me. Oh well, it's a solid flick, well worth a look if you wanna prepare for the arrival of our simian overlords.
The wife woke up for the last bit of the movie, then she busied herself in the kitchen with the evening meal prep, as she had a recipe she was trying out and wanted to get started on it in case she ran into any weird hiccups along the way.
I breezed through another episode of Prime Suspect, then spent some time cleaning up the TiVo season passes for series that have gotten canned, as well as the Ghost Hunters stuff that I just can't bring myself to sit through anymore. I used to really enjoy the show, nowadays I feel like it's a chore to bother with it, as they so rarely have anything happen and when they do it's usually somewhat questionable to me. I honestly can't recall the last time I was watching a show that is still airing that I had to tap out of, but I just don't give a shit about this stuff anymore.
In the evening the wife and I got into a Shout! Factory Blu-ray that she'd gotten me for Christmas, specifically the Roger Corman Women In Cages set, kicking off with the Jack Hill directed film The Big Doll House. These women in prison (or WiP) films all follow a relatively similar set-up, fresh meat is delivered to prison, usually runs afoul of the fellow inmates and warden, then makes friends and is abused by the guards before an escape attempt brings things to a head, many of them involving some sort of Banana Republic & their revolution, as a lot of them take place in South American or other tropical locales. This freedom of plotting allows the viewer to watch for the occasional nudity and some great lines that are peppered throughout, like this one from a vicious & sexually desperate prisoner to a hapless delivery guy: "Get it hard or I'll cut it off!" I mean, how can you not be amused by a film like that?
The set features three films, plus a few odds and ends as far as special features, so we watched the behind the scenes featurette called From Manila With Love, then popped in the second film in the set: the titular Women In Cages.
It's not actually directed by Jack Hill, and I think it might've suffered as a result, as the same tropes and scenarios didn't grab me 100% this time around, and while it was watchable, I would say that I'm definitely looking forward to the final film that we'll watch tomorrow afternoon, which promises more Hill, as well as Sid Haig in another sweaty, sleazy role.
We called it a night after the movie, as I knew the wife was tired and I wanted to get this written and then take another pass at the nerdlists before hitting the hay myself.
Be seeing you.
